Mangione Pleads Guilty in Federal Charges Over UnitedHealthcare CEO Death
Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to federal charges related to the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The surprise announcement came at a hearing on August 14, which could impact his upcoming New York state trial.
Mangione's lawyers plan to use any plea deal in federal court to argue that 'double jeopardy' prevents him from being tried twice for the same crime.
The 28-year-old was charged with interstate stalking resulting in death and stalking through the use of interstate facilities resulting in death. The harsher charges of murder, which could have carried a death penalty, were previously thrown out.
Mangione's sentencing in federal court is set for December 18, where he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. He also faces separate murder and other charges in New York state court beginning September 8.
