Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to two federal charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The 50-year-old executive was shot by a masked gunman on December 4, 2024, as he walked to a Midtown Manhattan hotel where UnitedHealth Group was holding its annual investor conference.

The gunman approached Thompson from behind and opened fire, continuing to shoot after Thompson fell to the ground. A multistate manhunt followed the shooting, with investigators releasing images of a person of interest who was seen checking into a Manhattan hostel and riding in a taxi.

Mangione, 28, was arrested five days after the killing at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania. A customer recognized him from the released images, and investigators found a gun and notebook that tied Mangione to Thompson's murder.
