Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to stalking and fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024. The incident occurred on a midtown Manhattan street outside the Hilton Hotel.

Mangione, an Ivy League graduate, claimed he was motivated by severe pain from a broken back and frustration with the health insurance system. He said he used a 3-D printer to create part of a gun and emailed UnitedHealthcare leadership posing as an investor to gather information about the company's annual conference.

Thompson's family released a statement saying they were grateful for the guilty plea but would continue to seek justice in state court. They also expressed gratitude to law enforcement for bringing Mangione to justice.
