Mangione State Murder Trial Postponed Amid Double Jeopardy Challenge
Luigi Mangione's state murder trial has been postponed due to his request to dismiss the case on double jeopardy grounds. The trial was initially set to begin in September, but the court is now considering Mangione's motion.
Mangione pleaded guilty to federal charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson just days before the postponement. In a statement to the federal court, Mangione admitted to stalking and killing Thompson in 2024.
According to Mangione, he was motivated by frustration with the U.S. healthcare system after suffering from severe back pain for years. He researched UnitedHealth Group's annual investor conference and posed as an investor to gain access to the event.
