Amazon's Anthropic Stake Now Moves Earnings as Alphabet Sees Flexibility Shift
Amazon's investment in Anthropic has grown significantly over time and now affects its reported earnings. The company has invested around $13 billion in Anthropic, with a carrying value of nearly $190 billion due to the AI startup's rising valuation. This stake generates non-operating pretax income exceeding $50 billion for Amazon.
The deal also includes a deep commercial partnership where Anthropic agreed to spend more than $100 billion over 10 years on AWS technologies and Amazon's custom Trainium chips. This will lock in up to 5 gigawatts of compute capacity for training and running Claude models on Amazon's cloud, benefiting both companies.
In comparison, Alphabet's stake in SpaceX is now a liquid asset with a clear market value after the rocket company went public. The original $900 million investment from 2015 has grown to a mid-single-digit-percentage stake worth around $80 billion to $90 billion at recent prices, representing a gain of over 90 times the initial outlay.
