Mangione to Plead Guilty in Federal Case Over Murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO

Luigi Mangione, accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, will plead guilty in federal court. The charges stem from a five-day manhunt following Thompson's December 4, 2024 slaying in New York City.

Mangione was charged with two counts of stalking that led to Thompson's death, carrying a potential life sentence. Federal terrorism charges, which carried the death penalty, were earlier dismissed by the courts.

The state case, where Mangione faces second-degree murder charges, is scheduled to begin in early September. Legal experts suggest that accepting a plea deal in the federal case could allow Mangione to avoid the state trial due to double jeopardy.
