Mariellen Patricia Merck Honored After Peaceful Passing at 90
Mariellen Patricia “Pat” Schaaf Merck passed away peacefully at her home in Tillson, New York, on October 2, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Born on May 5, 1936, in Dayton, Ohio, Pat grew up during the Great Depression, an experience that shaped her deep appreciation for life and relationships. She attended St. Anthony School and St. Joseph Commercial High School before marrying James John Merck in February 1957. Together, they built a life in Tillson, where Pat remained until her passing.
Pat was known for her vibrant personality and love for people. She treasured conversations, often engaging in hour-long phone calls where she shared updates and connected with loved ones. Her 90th birthday celebration in May 2026 brought family from across the country to honor her, leaving her with cherished memories. Pat’s life was marked by her dedication to family, community service, and her faith. She served as a past president of the Rosendale Women’s Club and the Rosendale Library, and she ran the Rosendale Community Medical Equipment Loan Closet for many years.
In addition to her community involvement, Pat was an accomplished oil-on-canvas painter and enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the United States, Europe, South America, and even Russia. She was also an active member of St. Peter’s Church in Rosendale, participating in the Rosary Society and serving as a Eucharistic Minister. Pat’s legacy includes her three surviving children, eight grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and a wide circle of friends and family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter’s Church on October 8, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., followed by burial at St. Peter’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be held at George J. Moylan Funeral Home on October 7 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hudson Valley Hospice or St. Peter’s Church.
