McDonald's Invests Big in Restaurant Upgrades and AI-Powered System
McDonald's plans to invest heavily in restaurant upgrades and training as part of its growth strategy, McDonald's > NEXT. The company aims to rebound from sluggish sales and win over more diners at a time when inflation and flat traffic are expected to persist.
The plan includes the introduction of Restaurant > NEXT, which features updated equipment, technology, and operations, including an artificial intelligence-powered operating system called ArchIQ. This will allow for more efficient management of inventory, scheduling, and order accuracy, as well as AI-enabled revenue management and suggestive selling.
McDonald's is projecting that the upgrades will pay off in about four years, with efficiency improvements resulting in an increase of roughly $100,000 in annual cash flow for the average U.S. restaurant. The company plans to spend up to $8.5 billion through 2036 to accelerate franchisees' investment in the restaurant improvement plan.
Other key elements of McDonald's growth strategy include building a media network that involves advertising other businesses on its digital drive-thru displays, and introducing new menu items such as hand-breaded chicken options and grilled chicken sandwiches. The company aims to grow its global market share in chicken sales by about 1.5 percentage points and in beverages by about 1.5 percentage points.
