McDonald's Modernization Push Hits Bumps Amid Muted Demand Outlook
McDonald's is facing a two-pronged challenge as it rolls out its modernization push, which includes an artificial intelligence platform for drive-thrus and a $8.5 billion commitment to support franchisees.
The company's ArchIQ platform aims to bring voice-controlled ordering to drive-thru lanes, monitor inventory levels, and sharpen order accuracy, all part of its NEXT strategy to standardize store-level operations and address uneven execution across restaurants.
Alongside this tech offensive is a substantial financial commitment to operators, with $8.5 billion going towards rent relief and direct financial assistance, approximately $5 billion of which will reach franchisees in the coming years and extend through 2036.
Analysts have pared back their models due to muted demand outlook, with BTIG cutting its price target to $295 from $350, while UBS trimmed its own target from $340 to $320. RBC Capital Markets lowered its target to $285 from $290, citing the risk of soft US same-store sales until lower-income diners return in force.
