McDonald's Plummets to 52-Week Low on CEO's Bleak Forecast
McDonald's (NYSE:MCD) shares dropped 4.8% to $238.34 on Wednesday, hitting a fresh 52-week low of $234.04. This decline came after CEO Chris Kempczinski told investors that he doesn't expect conditions to improve due to persistent inflation and flat traffic.
The company's struggles have been building for several quarters, with global comparable sales decreasing from 5.7% in Q4 2025 to 1.3% in Q2 2026. In July, U.S. comparable sales were slightly negative, signaling a decline in low-income customer traffic, which is the customer group that anchors McDonald's value proposition.
On Wednesday, management committed up to $8.5 billion to its NEXT strategy, but this move has raised concerns about the company's flexibility if conditions worsen. The franchise base under margin pressure is the single largest threat to the model, and stabilizing it may be more rational than defending near-term earnings.
