McDonald's Stock Plummets to 2022 Low Amid Consumer Spending Squeeze
McDonald's stock price has tumbled to its 2022 low, dropping nearly 5% intraday on August 23 to $234. This marks a significant decline from its all-time high of $341.75 in March this year, representing a 30% drop.
The company's Investor Day presentation on August 22 triggered short-term profit-taking and risk-averse selling pressure, broadening the stock's losses. McDonald's management presented conservative long-term operational targets and revenue expansion expectations, which were seen as below market standards.
One of the main reasons for the decline is cooling purchasing power among low- and middle-income consumers, driven by high inflation and interest rates. This has led to a reduction in dining out frequency and takeout orders from these consumer groups.
The company faces additional challenges, including negative customer traffic growth in its domestic US market, as well as slowing growth in overseas markets due to boycotts in the Middle East and weak purchasing power in parts of Europe.
However, technical analysis indicates that McDonald's stock price has entered severely oversold territory, suggesting a potential technical rebound in the short term. With its P/E ratio at 19.3x and dividend yield around 3.2%, 3.3%, some see the current valuation as attractive for long-term value capital and income funds.
