Mediatek Tackles Memory Costs, Google Unfazed by $200 Billion Datacentre Bill

Google's datacentre spending has reached an astonishing $200 billion, according to its Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian. He stated that a Google server pays for itself in two years and is self-sustaining within one year if it's running on Google chips.

Mediatek has launched its 2nm Dimensity 9600 Pro processor, which aims to reduce memory usage amidst high memory costs. The company claims to be working closely with customers to develop technologies that minimize memory footprint while maintaining performance.

Imec has demonstrated the feasibility of patterning tight-pitch random logic structures using a CAR-based single-print High NA EUV lithography step. This technology can potentially enable more advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes.

The value in datacentres is shifting from the chip to the rack, according to Yole's Eric Mounier. He notes that hyperscalers and AI labs are co-designing their own AI chips and incorporating advanced packaging, HBM4, co-packaged optics, and power. This trend has led to a full-system approach in datacentre performance, where performance is now sold by the rack rather than the chip.
