Memory Chip Shortage Drives Up Amazon Device Prices

A global shortage of memory chips is driving up prices on various Amazon gadgets. The rise in demand for artificial intelligence and data centres has contributed to the shortage, which is affecting consumers worldwide.

The price increase affects several popular devices, including Echo speakers, Fire TV, Kindle e-readers, and Eero routers. Some products have seen a 60% hike in prices, with the Echo Dot increasing from $49.99 to $79.99. The 16GB Kindle e-reader has also become more expensive by $40.

Amazon attributes the price rise to increased costs associated with its products. Other companies like Apple and Microsoft have also raised prices on their products due to rising memory chip costs. Cloud providers are purchasing large quantities of memory chips for AI infrastructure, exacerbating the shortage.

A report by JPMorgan Global Research predicts that DRAM chip prices could increase by 400% or more between 2024 and 2026. The International Data Corporation warns that the crisis may reduce global supplies of PCs and smartphones, with lower-priced smartphones particularly vulnerable to a decline.
