Merck and Moderna's Personalized Cancer Vaccine Shows Promising Results
A breakthrough in personalized cancer treatment has been announced by Merck and Moderna. The companies reported that their Phase 3 trial, INTerpath-001, had succeeded in using a personalized mRNA vaccine to treat melanoma patients.
The study enrolled 1,137 people whose melanoma had been surgically removed but who remained at high risk of the cancer coming back. Two-thirds received the personalized therapy, intismeran autogene, alongside Merck's immunotherapy Keytruda, while the rest got Keytruda alone.
The trial measured recurrence-free survival and distant metastasis-free survival, with the combination of intismeran autogene and Keytruda showing a significant improvement in both areas. The result was described as a 'landmark moment for adjuvant melanoma treatment' by Professor Georgina Long, medical director of Melanoma Institute Australia and the trial's principal investigator.
The personalized vaccine works by using mRNA to instruct the body to build a specific protein that is present in the patient's tumor cells but not elsewhere. This process depends on having a tumor sample available for sequencing and analysis.
