Michigan Antitrust Lawsuit Against Oil Companies Dismissed

A Michigan antitrust lawsuit against major oil companies has been dismissed by a district judge. The case, filed by Attorney General Dan Nessel, alleged that Exxon, Chevron, Shell, BP, and the American Petroleum Institute conspired to restrain the rise of electric vehicles and renewable primary energy technologies in the United States.

Judge Jane Beckering concluded that antitrust law does not offer a remedy for such claims, with one exception: an allegation that the oil companies overcharged Michigan residents. However, she dismissed this claim as well, finding that there was no direct link between the alleged conspiracy and the overcharges borne by Michigan residents.

Climate litigation has been growing in recent years, with environmentalist groups seeking to penalize oil and gas companies for alleged violations grounded in climate science research. While some courts have ruled in favor of plaintiffs, others have dismissed cases due to lack of evidence.
