Michigan Climate Lawsuit Against Oil Companies Dismissed by US Judge

A US judge has dismissed an antitrust lawsuit filed by Michigan against four major oil companies, including BP, Chevron, Exxon, and Shell. The lawsuit alleged that the companies colluded to stifle competition in renewable energy, including electric vehicles.

US District Judge Jane Beckering rejected the lawsuit, saying that antitrust laws do not protect against the injuries claimed by Michigan. She specifically noted that the distance between the alleged conspiracy and the overcharges suffered by Michigan residents is too great to establish a causal link.

This decision is consistent with prior rulings in similar cases filed in other states, including Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, and South Carolina. A lawyer for Chevron had previously described Michigan's lawsuit as 'baseless'.
