A significant agreement has been reached between Microsoft and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) regarding the use of artificial intelligence in schools. The deal includes 10 legal enforceable protections, one of which is that Microsoft cannot use teachers' or students' data to improve an AI model, except in 'narrow safety and security' circumstances.

The agreement was praised by AFT President Randi Weingarten, who said, 'We have forged a hard-fought, iron-clad privacy agreement with real teeth that protects students and families.'

According to Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith, this standard sets 'a high bar for child privacy and AI safety' and will be extended to every school district across the country.
