Microsoft-Backed Data Center Faces Backlash Over Pollution Concerns

A Microsoft-backed data center in Vineland, New Jersey, is facing backlash over environmental concerns and unpermitted construction. The DataOne data center has been under construction since 2025 and was contracted to deliver computing power to Microsoft.

The project has drawn criticism from residents, who claim that the site has several unpermitted gas turbines operating on the premises, emitting air pollution near two local schools. Additionally, an investigation revealed that DataOne constructed a 1.5-million-gallon liquefied natural gas storage tank without proper permits.

Residents have also complained about excessive noise levels at night, which affected those living within a half-mile radius of the site. An engineering review found that the stormwater management system does not comply with state regulations, potentially leading to on-site and off-site flooding.
