Microsoft Boosts Rust to Tier-1 Language Status
Microsoft has elevated Rust to Tier-1 language status for internal development, making it one of the company's best-supported programming languages. This means that Microsoft teams no longer have to set up their own development and production tools for Rust. Instead, the company offers a clear process that covers everything from writing code to shipping and maintaining it.
The support includes secure builds of the Rust compiler and toolchain, standard development tools, CI and quality workflows, integration with Microsoft platforms, and security and compliance steps needed for internal software. This is significant because it turns Rust into a fully supported option rather than something individual teams need to accommodate largely on their own.
Rust is now used in many types of software, including firmware, drivers, kernels, hypervisors, microservices, and applications. However, C++ remains deeply rooted in the company after many years, so both languages will continue to be used together in many projects.
