Microsoft Caps Xbox Cloud Gaming at 5-15 Hours per Month
Microsoft is introducing monthly hour caps for Xbox Cloud Gaming starting in November. The limits will range from 5 to 15 hours per month, affecting around 4% of Game Pass subscribers. This move comes after a packed slate of cloud-enabled releases through October 6.
The company expects the limits to impact heavy users, transferring part of the variable cost to them. Xbox content and services revenue fell 10% in the latest quarter, making it crucial for Microsoft to offset any churn from the caps with higher cloud yield.
Game Pass subscribers will be able to buy extra hours after reaching a cap, but prices have not been disclosed yet. A separate pay-as-you-go option will let users stream eligible games they already own without requiring a Game Pass subscription.
The move has sparked concerns about unpopular hour prices potentially lifting cancellations and weak first-party engagement leaving added cloud capacity underused. However, Microsoft can monetize outliers without broad disruption if 96% of subscribers remain below their caps.
