Microsoft Copilot Revamp Brings Hybrid Business Model and Enhanced Efficiency
Microsoft has revamped its Copilot product to include three main features: Home, Code, and Autopilot. This redesign aims to make the platform more efficient and flexible for businesses. With Home, users can combine chat and coworking while accessing Word, Excel, and PowerPoint within the Copilot experience.
Code enables business users to create apps, dashboards, and workflows using technology derived from GitHub Copilot. Autopilot is a persistent cloud agent that continues recurring and multi-day work without repeated prompts. This new design allows Microsoft to charge for both broad access through user subscriptions and consumption revenue when an agent takes on longer jobs.
The commercial change matters more than the product announcement, as it introduces a hybrid business model. The redesign includes a billing architecture, making it easier for customers to track and control their spending. Microsoft can now collect consumption revenue from long-running agent work using Copilot Credits, alongside per-user subscriptions.
