Microsoft Datacentre in Quincy, Washington Sets New Standard for Sustainable Tech Growth
Microsoft's datacentre in Quincy, Washington has been hailed as a success by the company's Vice Chair and President Brad Smith. Built in 2006, the centre was the first project designed, built, and owned by Microsoft.
The datacentre has had a significant impact on the local community, with the town experiencing more than 40% growth in the last 20 years, outpacing even Seattle's growth. Poverty rates have been cut in half, and property-tax revenue from the county has grown twelve-fold.
Smith cites the centre's sustainable practices as a key factor in its success, including a water reuse facility that recirculates cooling water for reuse, reducing reliance on local resources. The centre also uses carbon-free hydro, solar, and wind power to fuel operations.
