Microsoft Engineer Let Go After Manager Says He's 'Too Young' for Major Responsibilities

A Microsoft software engineer based in Hyderabad shared his experience of being laid off on Reddit. The engineer, who has around three years of experience, claimed that his manager described him as 'relatively young' and assumed he did not have 'major responsibilities yet.'

The conversation with the manager allegedly took place during the latest round of layoffs at Microsoft, which affected most of the team. According to the engineer, the manager told him that being relatively young and having fewer responsibilities were reasons why his name was included in the headcount reduction.

However, the engineer clarified that he did not necessarily believe this was the actual reason for his layoff, suggesting that the manager may have been trying to console him during the conversation.

The engineer emphasized that being 'relatively young' and having fewer responsibilities do not reflect his circumstances at home. He is the sole earner in his family, supports his parents, helps fund his sister's education, and takes care of a loan his dad had taken.
