Microsoft Expands India Cloud Presence with Hyderabad Region Launch
Microsoft has launched its India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad, expanding its presence in the country's AI and cloud infrastructure. This move adds a new piece to India's digital puzzle, giving Microsoft four cloud regions in the country: Pune, Chennai, Mumbai, and now Hyderabad.
The company framed this expansion as part of a broader shift from digital public infrastructure to AI infrastructure. According to Puneet Chandok, Microsoft India and South Asia President, India is generating 20% of the world's data but only has 3% of data capacity.
India currently has 2 GW data centre capacity, which is expected to rise between 12-14 GW by 2035. The Hyderabad region is designed to support mission-critical and AI workloads at scale, with three availability zones and resilience aligned to India's regulatory and seismic requirements.
