Microsoft Files Patent for In-Game Ad System on Xbox Consoles and PC
Microsoft is exploring new ways to monetize its gaming ecosystem without raising prices on Xbox. The company has filed a patent for an advertising system that will display ads in games on consoles and PC.
The technology giant's goal is to avoid interrupting gameplay, so the ads will be displayed during loading screens, mission completions, or other moments when the player is not actively engaged with the game.
According to the patent, the system would detect 'triggering events' within a game and activate advertisements at precise moments. The document also reveals details about an 'advertising credits' system that would grant players periods without ads.
Xbox has confirmed that it will integrate ads into its services, including Xbox Cloud Gaming, which will have a free tier with ads. The company's head of strategy, Matthew Ball, believes ads are the ideal alternative to price increases.
