Microsoft Fixing Bugs Introduced by Patch Tuesday Updates

Microsoft's September Patch Tuesday updates brought hundreds of security fixes to its software. However, as is often the case, some users encountered new problems rather than just the patched ones.

The update broke logins for some users, while others experienced issues with audio and Excel functions. Specifically, Excel 2016 users were unable to perform certain paste operations, but a hotfix in update 5002665 partially fixed this issue. Users of Remote Desktop Services also encountered instability, including failed RDP connections and servers that became stuck at 'Please wait for the Remote Desktop Configuration'.

Microsoft released out-of-band updates to address these issues, including one for Credential Guard-protected machine accounts, which had lost some security within Active Directory. This caused problems with device recognition in some cases. Microsoft plans to introduce a permanent solution in a future update.

Other affected areas included applications that use HCS-managed virtual machines and USB Audio Class 1.0 devices. The latter issue was particularly frustrating for users, as it resulted in no sound coming from their audio devices and unresponsive volume controls.
