Microsoft Gives Edge Users a Year-Long Warning: IE Mode Ends by 2029

Microsoft has set an expiration date for Internet Explorer mode in its Edge browser. The company will stop supporting IE mode, which is currently the only way to run IE's rendering engine on current versions of Windows, by at least the end of 2029.

The notice was posted in the Microsoft 365 admin center and warns IT administrators that they should start planning their migrations now. This means organizations that still depend on IE-only applications will need to rebuild or replace them.

According to gHacks, Microsoft has committed to announcing an end-of-support date at least a year before it takes effect. The company is giving admins time to update or replace internal software, which can take years.

IE mode is a compatibility feature inside Edge that lets it load pages with Trident, the older engine that powered Internet Explorer 11. Microsoft officially retired the standalone Internet Explorer 11 browser in June 2022, after 26 years of service.
