Microsoft Joins Calls for Slower AI Development with New Code of Conduct
Microsoft has joined the growing chorus of tech companies calling for slower AI development. The company has released a code of conduct for its Machine Automated Intelligence (MAI) models, which outlines values and behavioral limits.
The MAI code is meant to guide training, technical controls, and evaluation, with operator rules and user requests ranking below it. Microsoft's AI chief Mustafa Suleyman emphasized that human control comes first, stating 'If it isn't safe we shouldn't build it.'
The code sets no specific speed limit but does impose limits on the models' autonomy, such as requiring authorized personnel to intervene or shut them down. Microsoft also rejects any claims to rights or well-being for its AI models.
