Microsoft Launches Affordable Surface Lineup with Snapdragon X2 Plus Chip
Microsoft has unveiled refreshed Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models, both powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X2 Plus chip. Announced on September 23, 2026, and set to hit retail shelves on October 13, 2026, these devices mark a shift from the first-generation Snapdragon X Plus silicon. The new Surface Pro starts at $1,149.99, while the Surface Laptop is priced at $1,199, positioning them as direct competitors to Apple’s MacBook Air.
The Snapdragon X2 Plus chip in these models is a 6-core processor paired with up to 24GB of LPDDR5x memory and 512GB of storage. Microsoft claims the new devices offer up to 17% faster Office workloads, 18% better battery efficiency, and over 60% faster graphics performance compared to the previous generation. The Surface Pro features a 12-inch display with up to 90Hz refresh rate and 500 nits of peak brightness, while both devices include a new Black colorway and optional 5G connectivity.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Plus is designed as a mainstream alternative to the flagship Snapdragon X2 Elite, offering a 35% single-core performance boost, 17% multi-core improvement, and 39% GPU enhancement over the original Snapdragon X Plus. The chip includes an 80 TOPS NPU for on-device AI features, extending this capability to a more affordable Surface tier. Microsoft’s move is part of a broader strategy to prove that Arm-based Windows PCs can compete on price and battery life, not just performance.
The introduction of the Snapdragon X2 Plus is seen as a critical step in expanding the market share of Arm-based Windows PCs, which has plateaued in the 4% to 6% range. While flagship chips like the Snapdragon X2 Elite generate headlines, the X2 Plus is positioned to challenge Intel and AMD in the sub-$1,200 price segment, where most laptop sales occur. This launch could have significant ripple effects across the PC market, particularly as Qualcomm aims to grow its share in the coming years.
