Microsoft Layoffs Choke Creativity: Developer Fears Mediocre Games Ahead
Microsoft's gaming division is bracing for more layoffs before the end of the year, aiming to cut over 3,000 employees. One id Software lead programmer, Chris Hays, recently spoke out against these cuts and Microsoft's broader industry practices.
Hays argued that reducing a team by half will inevitably result in mediocre games, as it erases collective experience and past successes. He contended that companies like Microsoft underestimate the developmental fallout of staff cuts.
Hays also criticized the lack of tolerance for failure in the gaming industry, stating that even a single failed launch can be fatal for an entire team. This 'no margin of error' mindset stifles growth and learning, he claimed.
