Microsoft Moves WinUI Development to GitHub as Open-Source Efforts Continue

Microsoft has completed its planned migration of WinUI to open-source development, moving its mainline development process to GitHub. Developers can now create branches, submit pull requests, and perform code reviews directly through the public repository.

The company is currently testing WinUI pull requests before opening contributions from outside developers. This temporary restriction allows Microsoft to verify that its end-to-end workflow works correctly before allowing community members to contribute code.

Microsoft plans to pursue additional open-source goals and publish new milestones after it finalizes them. One of those milestones will focus on enabling community members to submit pull requests, which could give Windows developers more influence over the framework and potentially encourage broader adoption for native Windows 11 apps.
