Microsoft Opens Quantum Computing Center for DARPA Collaboration
Microsoft has opened a new research center in Maryland alongside the University of Maryland and other industry partners. The facility will house a quantum system using Microsoft's Majorana 2 chip for independent testing and evaluation by DARPA, the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
The center is part of a collaboration between Microsoft and DARPA to develop economically feasible quantum computing systems by 2033. Until now, DARPA has evaluated Microsoft's technology remotely, accessing machines in Redmond, Washington, and Europe.
With physical access to the new Maryland facility, DARPA experts can load hardware and run it through their own boot sequences. Zulfi Alam, corporate vice president of Microsoft Quantum, said that this arrangement 'enforces a certain amount of engineering rigor' as Microsoft moves from research toward commercial products.
