Microsoft Overhauls Windows 11 in 2026: Pause Updates Forever, Fix Bloat

Microsoft has been working to improve Windows 11 in response to user complaints about performance issues and bloat. In 2025, users expressed frustration with the operating system's sluggishness, reliability problems, and lack of meaningful updates. The backlash led Microsoft to pivot and commit to fixing core issues.

The company is slowly but surely addressing these concerns. One key change is the ability to pause Windows updates indefinitely in increments of up to 35 days. This feature was previously limited to a short grace period before automatic updates would resume.

Microsoft has also made changes to the taskbar, allowing users to move and resize it as needed. The Start menu has been redesigned with more customization options, including the ability to remove recommended apps and shortcuts from view.

Additionally, Windows Search is now faster and cleaner, prioritizing local search results over web content. Users can also turn off web results altogether if they prefer.

Other improvements include reduced Copilot buttons in certain applications, a streamlined setup process, and the introduction of point-in-time restore as a failsafe measure to recover from system failures.
