Microsoft Patents Ad System That Hides Ads in Games' Natural Pauses
Microsoft has filed a patent for a game-state ad system that uses signals from PC and console games to serve ads at natural pause points, such as boss defeats or level transitions. This approach is similar to mobile gaming's ad-reward loop, but tailored to free-to-play titles on more traditional platforms.
The patent application, filed in April 2026, describes a content management layer that holds ads until the game signals a natural stopping point. The system tracks session time against a defined block of ad-free play, known as 'credit duration.'
When the credit nears expiry, the system opens a promoted content window and waits for the signal from the game engine flagging a pause. This could be a boss defeated, quest complete, cutscene ended, or loading screen active.
The system then freezes the session, plays an ad, and restores gameplay, issuing the player a new credit to extend their next block of ad-free time. The patent also contemplates cloud-streamed titles and notes that machine learning could identify natural pause moments in games that do not send explicit signals.
