Microsoft Patents System to Pause Gameplay with Ads During Downtime
Microsoft's recent patent application has sparked concerns about the potential for in-game ads that pause gameplay during downtime. The system, described in a September 3rd filing, monitors points when gameplay activity is lowered or halted, such as at the end of a boss fight or loading screen, and notifies a content management system to display promotional material.
The patented system would allow for an allotment of ad-free game time, which could be either static, like 30 minutes, or tied to advancement in the game itself. Additionally, players who watch an advertisement in full could earn additional uninterrupted game time.
While a patent filing doesn't guarantee a product will be created, this revelation is worrying for those subscribed to services like Xbox Game Pass. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft will move forward with developing this technology.
