Microsoft has reached an agreement with the American Federation of Teachers regarding the use of artificial intelligence in schools. The deal includes 10 legally enforceable protections to ensure student and teacher data is kept private.

The agreement, announced on April 3, comes amid growing concerns about AI usage in education. According to Microsoft, teachers' or students' data cannot be used to improve an AI model, except in 'narrow safety and security' circumstances.

American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten praised the agreement, stating it sets a high bar for child privacy and AI safety.

The union is pushing to extend this agreement to every school district across the country. Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith said they aim to 'set a new standard' for AI usage in education.
