Microsoft Remakes Windows for Human and Agent Users

Microsoft is evolving Windows to support both human and agent users, according to Executive Vice President of Windows + Devices Pavan Davuluri. The company's goal is to make Windows a complete end-to-end system that can handle agentic workloads, which will require new platform capabilities. These changes will affect the Windows file system, security model, PowerShell, and other foundational components.

Davuluri emphasized the importance of maintaining customer obsession, treating Windows as a full-stack system, focusing on user experiences, and building Windows openly and transparently. He also committed to improving Windows quality and reliability after his promotion to EVP in March 2026.

The team is working on Windows identity and manageability to make them better able to service agents. Microsoft Execution Containers are being developed to help secure agents by running untrusted code in sandboxes or virtual machines. The company plans to roll out new PCs built on the Nvidia RTX Spark platform this fall, including the Surface Laptop Ultra optimized for RTX Spark.

Davuluri believes that Microsoft needs to keep a hand in hardware design to understand the full stack and develop platform abstractions. He sees Windows as a key player in the agentic future, where agents will be used to perform tasks such as AI model training and inference.
