Microsoft Shifts Focus to AI as Stock Surges
Microsoft's focus has shifted from highlighting customer migrations to the cloud to emphasizing its AI assistant Copilot and AI agents. This change in emphasis comes as the company's stock has surged by 34% over the past three months, outperforming the S&P 500's 2.5% gain. On the fiscal Q4 2026 call, management reported that customer demand for Azure continues to exceed available capacity.
Azure, Microsoft's cloud business, grew 43% in the same quarter, while commercial cloud revenue from Microsoft 365, which includes Copilot, increased by 16%. Management adjusted this figure to account for a lift in the year-earlier quarter. The growth of Azure and Microsoft 365 remains strong, but the shift towards AI-focused products raises questions about whether Copilot's revenue will be sufficient to justify the company's current valuation.
Microsoft is now guiding Azure growth at approximately 45% for the fiscal Q1 2027 report, before accounting for currency effects. The company has also announced that it will start reporting Azure sales each quarter, making it easier to track its progress. However, until Copilot's revenue is explicitly reported, investors may remain uncertain about the sustainability of Microsoft's current stock price.
