Microsoft Struggles to Reclaim $500 Amid Infrastructure Expansion Concerns
Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) has been struggling to reclaim the $500 price level after slipping below it. The company's aggressive infrastructure expansion, which includes a $41 billion capital expenditure in its fiscal fourth quarter, is causing concern among investors.
The expense, including $5.6 billion through finance leases, is primarily directed towards processors, GPUs, and other shorter-lived equipment. Operating cash flow reached $55.4 billion for the quarter, but free cash flow came in lower at $19.6 billion, highlighting the growing gap between earnings and expansion costs.
The divergence of revenue growth and capital commitments has become a central concern for investors. Microsoft's $9.7 billion cloud agreement with IREN further illustrates the scale of infrastructure needed to remain competitive against rivals like Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta.
Microsoft also faced widespread Outlook and Exchange Online disruptions on August 31, affecting thousands of users across its cloud ecosystem. Furthermore, the company uncovered a large-scale business email compromise campaign targeting finance teams, with over one million fraudulent emails detected between August 3 and 5.
