Microsoft Unveils Upgraded Surface Devices with Snapdragon X2 Plus SoC

Microsoft has unveiled its second-generation consumer Surface devices, featuring Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X2 Plus SoC. The upgraded processor delivers up to 95% faster on-device AI inference performance compared to the previous generation.

The Surface Pro 12-inch and 13-inch Surface Laptop continue to serve as entry-level models in Microsoft's first-party Surface PC lineup. The devices now feature a new 'Black' color option, while the previously offered 'Ocean' (ocean green) color has been discontinued.

Despite the reduction in core count from 8-core to 6-core, Microsoft claims improvements of up to 17% in Office productivity workloads, up to 18% in battery efficiency, over 60% in graphics performance, and up to 95% in on-device AI inference performance. The maximum memory capacity has been increased from 16GB to 24GB.

The Surface Pro 12-inch features a 12-inch LCD with touch and pen input support, while the Surface Laptop 13-inch includes a full-size backlit keyboard and precision touchpad. Both devices have had their maximum display brightness increased from 400 nits to 500 nits, improving outdoor visibility.

The redesigned Surface Mouse eliminates left and right click buttons, replacing them with new haptic feedback technology. The device generates vibrations at the moment a click is registered or when a window snaps into position.
