Microsoft X Account Compromised to Promote Fake Clippy Crypto Token
Microsoft's X account was compromised for two days in October 2026, during which attackers used its 13 million followers to promote a fake Clippy cryptocurrency token under the $MSFT ticker.
The attackers altered the profile image to the Clippy paperclip character and followed content from an impersonator account. A post appeared asking how many likes it would take to bring Clippy back, setting a target of 500,000 as a viral engagement hook.
Microsoft confirmed the breach and stated that it has no connection to the token. The company removed the unauthorized posts and secured its account, but not before deleting an apology post threatening legal action.
The incident highlights the importance of verifying information on social media, especially when it comes from verified accounts with recognizable logos.
