Microsoft X Account Hacked to Promote Clippy Crypto Scam
Microsoft's official X account was compromised on June 7th, allowing hackers to promote Clippy-themed cryptocurrency to its 13 million followers. The hack, reminiscent of past incidents where AI-powered scams went rogue, saw the account posting a tweet from a Clippy crypto account and changing its profile image to feature the iconic character.
The hacked account even posted a message stating that it would revive Clippy if it received 500,000 likes. However, users in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and other parts of the Middle East should be aware that this was an unauthorized post, not an official endorsement by Microsoft.
Microsoft has since secured the account, removed the unauthorized posts, and is investigating the circumstances surrounding the hack. The company emphasized that it does not support or authorize any cryptocurrency token and will take appropriate legal action to remove the unauthorized materials.
