Microsoft X Account Hacked to Promote Fake Crypto Token
Microsoft's X account was hacked on October 1-2, 2026, allowing attackers to promote a fake cryptocurrency token tied to the nostalgic Clippy mascot.
The hackers altered Microsoft's profile image to feature Clippy and followed and reposted content from an impersonator account. They also posted a question asking how many likes would be needed to bring Clippy back, with a target of 500,000 engagements.
The token was promoted using the $MSFT ticker, implying a connection between Microsoft and the cryptocurrency. However, the company denied any involvement and stated that it has no connection to the token.
Microsoft confirmed the breach and removed the unauthorized posts. The account has since been secured, but the incident remains under investigation. The company also warned users not to trust verified accounts and familiar logos, as they can be compromised.
