Microsoft's $115.9B AI Bet: Will Dividend Payouts Take a Hit?
Microsoft's shareholders received a bigger dividend check this year, but the tech giant's massive investment in AI infrastructure has raised questions about the sustainability of its payout. In fiscal 2026, Microsoft spent $115.9 billion on capital expenditures, up 79.62% from the previous year, as it continued to build out its cloud and AI capabilities.
The company's net income rose 31.34% to $133.749 billion, but free cash flow fell 6.46% to $66.987 billion. Despite this, Microsoft returned $26.445 billion in dividends and repurchased $22.271 billion in stock. This represents a significant increase from fiscal 2025, when capex was $64.551 billion against $24.082 billion in dividends.
Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella framed the payoff of its investment in AI, citing Azure revenue surpassing $100 billion for the first time and Microsoft 365 Copilot reaching over 30 million paid seats. However, the price action tells a more ambivalent story, with MSFT down 3.91% over the past year from $500.75.
CFO Amy Hood signaled that the intensity of Microsoft's investment in AI infrastructure will not ease, expecting FY27 capital expenditures to grow year-over-year and remaining free cash flow positive. The next dividend raise announcement is weeks away, and it will be a crucial test of whether Nadella can continue to fund both its AI buildout and shareholder payouts.
