Microsoft's Big Bet on OpenAI Sparks Concerns Over Dependence

Microsoft's commercial arrangement with OpenAI generated $24.1 billion in revenue for fiscal 2026, accounting for about 7% of the company's total revenue.

This significant chunk of revenue comes from a deal that also includes a $6.0 billion debt owed by OpenAI to Microsoft at June 30.

Microsoft's commercial backlog grew 84% to $678 billion last fiscal year, but only 25% excluding OpenAI. This is largely due to OpenAI's commitment in October to buy an additional $250 billion of Azure services.

Azure, Microsoft's cloud computing platform, topped $100 billion of revenue for the first time in fiscal 2026, growing 41% year over year.
