Amazon Blocks Meta's AI Agent from Completing Purchases on Its Marketplace
Amazon AMZN, the e-commerce and cloud infrastructure giant, has drawn a line in the sand around who gets to transact on its marketplace. The company blocked Meta's (META) Muse AI agent from completing purchases due to a technical restriction. According to Amazon, access through an unauthorized agent violates their conditions.
Muse users were informed that they needed to use approved methods for payment, such as one-time cards through Stripe's Link, rather than relying on the AI agent.
The clash between Amazon and Meta is significant because it sets a precedent for how AI agents interact with marketplaces. These agents are starting to sit between shoppers and sellers, putting control of customer relationships, transaction flows, and valuable commerce data directly at stake.
Amazon's North American business generated $116.2 billion in second-quarter sales and $9.1 billion in operating income, giving the company a strong economic incentive to protect its relationship with customers.
