Microsoft's Windows 10 Cutoff Sparks E-Waste Fears, Puts Hundreds of Millions at Risk

Microsoft's decision to end support for Windows 10 has left hundreds of millions of old PCs at risk of being discarded, contributing significantly to the growing problem of electronic waste. According to advocacy group PIRG, around 400 million PCs are affected by this change, which could result in an additional 1.6 billion pounds of e-waste if these machines are not properly recycled or repurposed.

While many of these computers may still be functional and capable of performing common daily tasks, they do not meet Microsoft's requirements for upgrading to Windows 11. The software giant's new hardware standards include TPM 2.0, UEFI Secure Boot, and newer processors, which shuts out older systems from the upgrade path.

For consumers, this shift can be particularly unfair, as those who have taken care of their computers may be forced to spend more money on upgrades or replacements. Critics argue that Microsoft's decision leaves many families with a difficult choice: keep using a less secure computer, try unofficial fixes, or replace a machine that still works.

Microsoft's Extended Security Updates program is available for eligible users, but it will only run through 2027. Other options include switching to Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC, which will be supported until January 2032, or moving to a different operating system like Linux or ChromeOS Flex.
