Middle East Tensions Ease, Boosting Wall Street at Month's Start
Wall Street kicked off August on a strong note as tensions in the Middle East eased and investors awaited key earnings reports. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 604.70 points, or 1.15%, to 53,089.73, while the S&P 500 gained 42.16 points, or 0.56%, to 7,531.88.
The easing of tensions in the Middle East led to a decline in crude oil prices, with Brent crude falling over 5.5%. This, combined with decreased borrowing costs, contributed to the positive market sentiment.
Major tech stocks, including Amazon and Microsoft, rose as investors alleviated concerns about the impact of AI spending on earnings. Amazon's market value surpassed $3 trillion for the first time, while Microsoft's shares gained ground after its recent earnings report.
However, not all sectors were positive, with chip stocks experiencing a decline following a rocky July. The Philadelphia chips index fell 2.8% as Micron lost 3.4% due to reports of Chinese rival CXMT considering a second memory-chip plant in Beijing.
