Moderna and Merck Unveil Experimental Melanoma Vaccine
Moderna and Merck have jointly announced an experimental vaccine that could prevent melanoma from recurring in patients who have undergone surgery. The vaccine, called Intismeran, is based on mRNA technology, similar to the Covid vaccines.
The study involved 1,137 patients who had previously removed surgically. Those who received the personalized cancer vaccine, combined with Merck's immunotherapy medication Keytruda, showed a statistically significant improvement in recurrence-free survival and distant metastasis-free survival compared to those taking only Keytruda.
According to Professor José Bautista of the Complutense University of Madrid, the announcement has 'significant scientific potential,' but the high cost of personalized treatment remains a concern.
