Moderna-Merck Cancer Vaccine Breakthrough Sparks Hope for Personalised Treatment
A breakthrough in cancer treatment has been made by Moderna and Merck & Co. Their personalised mRNA-based vaccine showed success in a late-stage melanoma trial, demonstrating for the first time that an mRNA-based cancer vaccine can be effective in a large-scale study.
The companies have not yet disclosed the full results of the trial, but investors and researchers are welcoming this landmark result as a potentially significant turning point for a field that has struggled to translate promising lab findings into successful human trials.
Unlike conventional vaccines designed to prevent infectious diseases, personalised cancer vaccines aim to treat patients who already have cancer by reducing the risk of recurrence after surgery. Moderna-Merck's approach uses mRNA to instruct cells to produce fragments of mutated proteins found in a patient's tumour, training the immune system to attack those specific mutations.
Jane Healy, head of oncology early development at Merck, explained that their vaccine can contain up to 34 mutations selected specifically for each patient. 'Thirty-four is quite a lot of chances, of shots on goal,' she said.
